05/03/11 Por Fin! Estamos Aqui! Oh no, scrap that, Spanish doesnt work anymore and Portugese is mental.
We got ourselves on a bus. We got dropped off on road with a petrol station and a lake that looked like some kind of theme park. We called our friend Renata and after a confusing chat and having explained that I was sure we were in the wrong place, she said 'No, no, take a boat!' Errr on the lake?! I thought she was asking us to pass some time, but, apparently she lives on an island in this wee surburb of Rio. RANDOM. Abit carribbean-esque. Cant complain! We were so glad of the free bed, we would never have come without it. It did however add an extra 2 hours onto our day to get into town and back! We certainly got to see Rio. From a bus, a boat and the metro!
Ilha Dos Pesadores e Ilha da Gigoia. Boats run 24/7.
Looking good. First night we went to Copacabana with Renata and Berto. We looked at sparkly things, watched celebrities wear even sparklier things on a red carpet at one of the Carnival Balls and then we ate Brasillian food. Mmm :)
Rio Carnival is one big party in one big city.
Everyone is invited and fancy dress is a given :)
One street is full of people and the next like a ghost town. You notice that Rio is on full lock down, boarded up banks and shutters over shops. A little freaky at times.
